Stephanie Mao // Assistant Music Director + Pianist
Stephanie Mao discovered her passion for collaborative music-making at an early age, and this love for working alongside other musicians has shaped her career. Originally from San Francisco, California, she earned her master’s degree in Collaborative Piano from the New England Conservatory, where she studied under Cameron Stowe and Jonathan Feldman. Prior to that, Stephanie completed her bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at Carnegie Mellon University under the guidance of Professor Hanna Li. She has had the privilege of performing for accomplished musicians such as Midori, Andrew Garland, Jane Eaglen, Thomas Hampson, Georg Lehner, Kyoko Hashimoto, Donald Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian, Byron Janis, Robert Page, and Christopher O’Riley.
Stephanie has been recognized by Boston Musical Intelligencer for her “virtuosic musicianship” and has been invited to collaborate and perform with several Boston music groups including Boston Opera Collaborative, Opera Hub, Boston Art Song Society, Cambridge Philharmonic, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston University Choral Society. While living in Boston, she held staff positions at the Boston Ballet School, the NEC Preparatory School, Boston University, and the Longy School of Music. Currently, Stephanie is based in Tucson, Arizona and works closely with students at the University of Arizona’s Fred Fox School of Music (as well as the students in the English Department as a graduate student advisor) and collaborates with local choirs and churches.
